Having not been vegan or vegetarian very long, I am having a hard time convincing my children that this is the way to go. I am currently raising my three boys (ages 6, 3, and 18 months) alone, and have had some resistance from family and their father about what they are eating. But the biggest resistance is probably from my 6 and 3 year olds, who have been eating the Standard American Kid Food Diet at daycare (fishsticks, chicken nuggets, grilled cheese, etc.) for some time. They don't like the new dishes at home, they wonder why the pizza and lasagna have no cheese, they miss hot dogs, etc. So, as someone who lives on a very tight budget (about $60/wk for food for all of us), what can I fix these guys to win their little hearts over? I want to raise them in a vegan household, and I'm not taking them to fast food joints (all though their dad does), but they can pick and choose at grandma's or school. I'm hoping that a vegan foundation at home will be a good start for them (and I've sent some vegan lunches, as well). But they're not very keen on vegan foods at the moment. New vegetables scare them, and honestly, even with several vegan cookbooks, my culinary skills leave something to be desired.
How do you go about converting the tastebuds of the little ones? Any hints, tips, tricks?
Thank you. :)
